Trump is not an obvious candidate to represent the Jesus-like, enemy-loving, turn-the-other-cheek, self-sacrificial servant-leader of the Christian gospels. But he has made it clear that he understands his role as a defender and protector of Christianity: from statements such as “we are going to say Merry Christmas again!”, “We will respect and defend Christian Americans” and “Christianity, it’s under siege”.
As experts put it, there is a sickness in American Christianity, and Trump is feeding on it. It is precisely such statements that have made Trump the “protector” of Middle Eastern Christians. Heseems to have their support because they have few alternatives to face the threats that they have in the region. According to some experts Middle Eastern Christians have a voice now. Upon closer scrutiny, however, such claims are nothing more than a cheap political exploitation of Middle Eastern Christians as pawns to score points on the domestic front, protecting the American Christian interests.
Furthermore, the use of “minorities” in his political discourse and ideologies to explain how Islamic values are inherently incompatible with Western values, risk to deepen the idea of a clash of civilisations between Muslims and a Western bloc. In this way, Christians residing in the Middle East seem to form a sort of “external” or “foreign” phenomenon that needs to be saved.It encourages “the ‘false notion’ of a conflict between Christians and Muslims while wrongly suggesting Christianity is a ‘Western phenomenon’.
Also the notion itself of “Middle Eastern Christians” is problematic because it contributes to treat them as a single entity. Furthermore, Trump’s travel ban that maintained an apparent special provision for Christians risks to be itself a “trap” for Middle Eastern Christians exposing them as “foreign bodies, and as groups protected and supported by Western powers”. The focus in any discussion of Middle East should be on eradicating ISIL and the threat it poses to non-Muslims and Muslims.
Focus should equally be upon the needs for justice and accountability on account of the crimes against humanity and war crimes and on the socio–economic problems in the region exacerbated by corruption and oppressive regimes. Any individual who preaches in favour of one or another religion or community should be considered a false prophet, not a saviour.
Trump non è certamente il candidato perfetto per rappresentare gli ideali cristiani del porgere l’altra guancia, amore verso i nemici, e spirito di sacrificio dei leaders. Ha però da subito reso chiaro il suo ruolo di protettore della Cristianità, dichiarando: “Torneremo a dire Buon Natale ancora!”, “Rispetteremo e difenderemo i cristiani americani”, e “la Cristianità è sotto assedio”. Come alcuni esperti hanno notato, Trump sta in tal modo provando cavalcare i disagi della comunità cristiana americana.
Allo stesso modo, le dichiarazioni di cui sopra, hanno reso il Presidente americano il “protettore” dei cristiani in Medioriente. Egli sembra godere del loro supporto per via delle poche alternative che questi hanno nel fronteggiare i rischi cui sono esposti nella Regione. Secondo alcuni esperti i cristiani residenti in Medioriente hanno ora una “voce” in loro aiuto.
Tuttavia, dopo un’osservazione più attenta, tale posizione di Trump pare essere volta più verso il fronte interno, a protezione degli interessi dei cristiani americani, che realmente a tutela dei cristiani in Medioriente. Inoltre, l’uso delle “minoranze” nei discorsi e nelle ideologie politiche del Presidente atto a spiegare l’incompatibilità dei valori musulmani e di quelli occidentali, rischia di rafforzare l’idea di uno “scontro tra civiltà”. In questo modo i cristiani residenti in Medioriente sembrerebbero formare una sorta di “comunità straniera” che ha bisogno di essere salvata.
Questo, unitamente alla definizione di “cristiani Mediorientali”, sembra suggerire che la cristianità sia un fenomeno propriamente occidentale. Il “travel ban” di Trump contro i musulmani, che ha mantenuto una certa apertura per i cristiani, rischia di isolare ulteriormente i cristiani residenti in Medioriente in quanto percepiti come “corpi estranei”, protetti e supportati dalle potenze occidentali.
L’argomento di discussione sul Medioriente dovrebbe concentrarsi su come combattere l’ISIS e sulla minaccia che questo pone nei confronti di Musulmani e non. Il focus dovrebbe essere sul bisogno di giustizia e di condanna dei crimini di guerra e contro l’umanità e sui problemi socio–economici nella Regione, esacerbati da corruzione e regimi oppressivi. Chiunque predichi a favore di una religione o di una comunità specifica a discapito di altre, dovrebbe essere considerato un falso profeta piuttosto che un salvatore.
